Carbon footprint per scope

Scope 1

  • Direct emissions at the mill for producing pulp and paper

  • Internal transportation

0 kg CO2e/tonne of paper

Scope 2

  • Purchased electricity from the grid

0 kg CO2e/tonne of paper

Scope 3

  • Extraction, production and processing of raw materials (wood, chemicals, fuels, packaging)

  • Transportation of incoming raw materials

  • Delivery of the paper to the customers

  • Disposal of the paper and its packaging

437 kg CO₂e /tonne of paper

The direct CO2 emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels from the Nymolla mill and internal transportation are fully captured and used for the production of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) filler. In fact, more CO2 was captured in 2022 than the amount released on site. Therefore, Nymolla mill doesn’t generate any fossil CO2 emissions linked to Scope 1.

Since 2008, the electricity purchased externally is from climate-neutral sources and there are no fossil CO2 emissions linked to Scope 2.

The reduction of the carbon footprint for Multicopy Zero will focus on the reduction of Scope 3.

Company Climate Strategy

Sylvamo's climate strategy is in line with the Paris Agreement. Our goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2030, compared to a baseline of 2019, is in line with reducing global warming well below 2°C and is approved by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi). Sylvamo commits to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 28.1% by 2030 from a 2019 base year, and to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions 27.5% by 2030 from a 2019 base year.
